The Crave Factor: Why Premium Food Photography Isn’t Optional Anymore

In today’s attention economy, you have about 2 seconds to stop a scroll. For food and beverage brands, especially in competitive markets like Toronto and Southern Ontario, that moment must spark desire. And desire begins with visuals.

When The Works introduced Crank Shakes—a line of indulgent dessert shakes—they knew the product would turn heads. But capturing the crave factor on camera? That’s where editorial-style food photography made the difference.

Here’s how we helped transform a great product into a high-converting visual campaign.

The Brief: More Than Just Milkshakes

Crank Shakes weren’t your average sweet treat. These layered shakes were bold, colourful, and over-the-top—but still had to feel premium.

The Works needed visuals that:

  • Made customers stop scrolling and start craving

  • Matched the playful tone of the product

  • Aligned with their overall brand aesthetic

  • Were flexible enough for menus, social ads, and in-store signage

This wasn’t about just documenting the shakes—it was about amplifying their story.

The Strategy: Editorial Meets Impact

As a Hamilton-based food photographer, our goal at Liban Creative Studio is always to blend intentional lighting, minimal styling, and bold composition to elevate the product. For Crank Shakes, that meant:

  1. Colour Palette and Backgrounds

We used soft pastels—like blush pinks and mint greens—to complement the rich browns and creams of the shakes without overpowering them. This created a clean canvas that still felt playful and fresh.

  1. Controlled Chaos

To capture that indulgent energy, we incorporated flying cocoa powder, scattered cookies, and crushed pistachios. These added texture and movement, creating a sense of "you have to taste this right now."

  1. Editorial-Level Focus

Using shallow depth of field and macro-style close-ups, we emphasized drip details, whip textures, and toppings to highlight the craftsmanship behind each shake. These images weren’t just pretty—they were tactical marketing assets.

The Results: Scroll-Stopping. Mouth-Watering. Brand-Aligned.

Within days of launching the Crank Shakes visual campaign, The Works saw:

  • Higher engagement on Instagram Reels and posts

  • Increased in-store shake orders

  • Positive feedback from franchisees on point-of-sale visuals

It’s proof that when you invest in premium photography, you’re not just creating content—you’re building brand equity.
